A garden in Denmark inspired by the colors of the Middle East

Beveled corners, a play of color and light: take a look at this unusual garden

The owners of this garden have lived in the Middle East for several years and were inspired by local terraces and plant colors. In their Danish home, they decided to combine contrasting colors, materials and textures with lush plants.

Thor Haddeland from DesignHaver designed this small garden, and designer Lars Junker worked with planting plants. The choice of sandstone is a clear example of the thoroughness with which the owners and landscape designers planned the site. The light stone effectively sets off the dark shade of rust of fences made of Korten steel.

The round garden pool is also made of Korten steel, reflecting the sky and the colors of the garden in the surface of the water. Sections lined with light sandstone mark the main lines of movement, intermediate paths of white stones connect different parts of the space. For flowering plants, a purple palette was chosen, playing with shades from pale lilac to almost purple in the petals of rhododendron and azalea.

Sandstone sandstone from the Sahara series was sorted manually. Before laying the slabs, landscape designers made a detailed color scheme, so that the laying out of the paths begins with light shades at the entrance to the house and turns into darker slabs on the large garden terrace.

A corner with a staircase leading to the garden from the garage solved the problem of isolation of the house from the street. Previously, the owners were concerned about the open view from the street entrance towards the bedroom. Now the hedge stretches along the stairs towards the garage and hides the house and the bedroom in it from passers-by.

Korten steel plates can be seen everywhere, they are the key material of the garden and one of the business cards of the DesignHaver bureau.

The owners are very fond of herbs and asked to plant flower beds where flowers grow next to wild grasses.

The sounds of water play an important role in this garden, especially next to the large terrace. The doors from the bedroom and living room can be opened so that the owners can listen to the murmur of a stream from a steel pool in which a flock of goldfish swims. “The garden gives us strength, energizes, soothes. There is nothing better for us than to sit and read here, listen to the water and the birds singing,” says the owner of the garden.

When evening comes, garden lighting transforms the plot. Spots of light illuminate the red maple leaves and branches from below, so that the light and shadow sides change places. The effect is especially noticeable on winter days, when the wind gives movement to grasses and branches.

The light in the garden can be controlled using the app — another detail that was important to the owner. “I can turn on the lights through the app when we are on the road and approaching home. I like the lighting of Japanese maple, bushes and flower beds, stairs and the whole created play of light,” says the owner.
