Apartment of an interior blogger in Berlin

Alexandra Eliza has never been interested in interior design. But after a trip to Tokyo, everything changed, and her apartment in Berlin was completely transformed. Now Alexandra is running a blog on Instagram dedicated to her home, where she talks about all the changes

Artist and art director Alexandra Eliza came to Berlin from Austria eight years ago to study photography. At that time, she was not going to stay in Germany for a long time — she liked to travel. But during a trip to Tokyo a couple of years ago, she suddenly realized that she really misses Berlin very much and would like to settle in it for a long time.

Since then, her painstaking work on the interior of the Berlin apartment has begun, about which she writes in detail in her Instagram blog. She started it during the pandemic on self-isolation “from nothing to do”, but the public quickly gained popularity, and today it has more than 25.5 thousand subscribers.

The house in which she lives was built in 1895. “The plaster on the walls in the living room is the only thing that has survived from that time,” Alexandra laughs. —Everything else had to be repaired after the move, because the apartment was in a deplorable state.”

The updated interior combines old and new, a common desire for laconism and bright details that reveal the inner world of the hostess. “Before I became interested in design, everything was much simpler here. 99% of the furniture consisted of IKEA furniture, – says Alexandra. — The apartment had no face, and that’s probably why I never felt at home in it. Everything changed when I visited Japan. The art, culture, people and life of the Japanese have greatly influenced me. And the first thing I decided to do was to redo my home.”

In a couple of years, Alexandra’s apartment has completely transformed. Light walls with rare colored accents like a terracotta wall in the bedroom, vintage furniture bought at a flea market, industrial-style items, posters and posters – all this is combined with each other, forming a single, harmonious whole. “I try to combine the old and the new,” says the hostess of the house. —It’s a wild mix of different elements that, in the end, match perfectly.”

When Alexandra started working on the interior, she had no clear plan — only intuition and an innate sense of taste. At first, of course, she flipped through Pinterest and fashion blogs on Instagram a lot, but mostly acted on a whim. “The only thing I paid attention to was that the basic elements were not too flashy and that the wooden furniture somehow harmonized with the floor,” she says. Moreover, she didn’t even see many items live, because she bought them online.

During these two years, not only the apartment has changed, but also the hostess herself – she began to study music, draw… She even has a small workshop where there is an easel. “For a long time I didn’t know what to do with this room — in winter it was too cold, in summer it was hot. It quickly turned into a warehouse—” says Alexandra. – Then I guessed to put a heater there and realized how cozy it was there. Gradually, the room was filled with things, a table appeared in it, then lamps, then canvas and paints… Now you can sit here all year round, read, draw or drink a glass of wine in the evening. From a storage room, this room has turned into my favorite place in the house, and I am very happy about it.”
