Designers advise: 7 working ways to beat an irregularly shaped room Design 19.02.2022 We asked the designers how they work with non-standard spaces. We share with you the best ideas. 1 Use ledges and columns for zoning If you got an apartment with complex architectural solutions instead of right angles, do not despair. If you beat them correctly, the flaws will become the main highlight of the interior. For example, designer Evgenia Astakhova advises using architectural features for zoning space. Designer Evgenia Astakhova: When zoning, we try to use existing ledges and columns. Our task is to turn unsuccessful architectural designs into profitable interior features. 2 Hide the unfortunate proportions with furniture Designers Igor and Galina Berezkin give a real example when a frankly unsuccessful layout became an advantage and even a starting point when choosing an apartment. And in the process of alteration, inconvenient elements were hidden with the help of furniture. Designers Igor and Galina Berezkin: One of our projects required the arrangement of an acoustic room (home theater) in an apartment. And since the customer is a sound engineer by profession, already at the stage of buying an apartment, he deliberately chose a layout option with one beveled wall. It was important to make sure that the unevenness of the wall did not catch the eye. To do this, a low storage system for equipment was placed along it it is custom-made and masks the bevel. Acoustic panels made of veneered MDF in the tone of dark wood of exotic breeds were used for finishing. They perfectly complemented the tropical style of the home theater. 3 Highlight with trim or light “I am guided by the principle: you can’t hide highlight. Such designs can be accentuated by finishing. Mirrors allow you to visually dissolve protruding elements, increase space, add light. The backlight works effectively. On both sides of the monolithic pylon or in a niche, you can mount an LED strip, emphasizing the non-standard geometry of the wall,” advises Evgenia Astakhova. 4 Focus on straight walls If you got an irregularly shaped room, maximize the use of straight walls along them it is easier to build a composition. Igor and Galina Berezkin recommend planning the layout so that most of the furniture and equipment are located along straight sections of the walls. Place bulky items there: sofa, bed, kitchen set with built-in appliances, wardrobe or chest of drawers. 5 Choose free-standing items To quickly and cost-effectively hide the unfortunate features of the room, use furniture and decor that are easy to move. They will help you quickly fill the space and decorate the right corners. “Making furniture for an apartment in a house with a semicircular facade or a bay window is expensive and technically difficult, explains Evgenia Astakhova. For the design of such surfaces, we use objects that do not require attachment to the wall.” 6 Equip storage There are no unnecessary elements in the interior, each can be endowed with useful functions. For example, turn it into an additional storage system. Designer Evgenia Astakhova: Protruding ventilation and sewerage shafts are located in the bathrooms and in the kitchen. We use them to host a storage system. Shelving and shelves can fit into any niche, and cabinets with hidden facades will make the space neat and functional. 7 Make utility rooms If you are planning a walk-in closet or a pantry, set aside a part of the apartment with the most inconvenient architecture for this room. Designers Igor and Galina Berezkin: Usually such zones are filled with storage systems that are easy to adapt to any structure of space. And beautiful doors will not disrupt the overall look of the interior and will successfully hide behind them all the imperfections of the geometry of the room Original content from the site
