• The main idea of the project: to preserve as much as possible the spirit and authenticity of the structural elements of the houses of the historical era of the 50s

The customers, a young family with two children and a husky dog, turned to the studio in order to change the apartment to suit their needs and stylistic preferences. The main wish was to allocate a separate room for an additional nursery and place two bathrooms: one with a bathtub, the second with a shower. Discussing stylistic solutions, designers and customers agreed on a single solution: to leave the spirit of the house as authentic as possible, to preserve decorative elements, to supplement somewhere in the spirit of that era, and to restore somewhere.

The living room, dining room and kitchen have become a single space. With such an arrangement of functional zones, it became possible to hide all the technical and culinary processes taking place in the kitchen. The owners do not cook much, so in this case the size of the kitchen area did not matter. Nevertheless, the designers have equipped it with everything necessary, so that, if desired, the kitchen can fully work. And if you don’t need to cook, you can hide the kitchen area from prying eyes by closing the doors with an accordion: the authors of the project decided not to leave them white, but to paint them manually with bright spots like Jackson Pollock canvases. So in the dining room, one of the walls is a real work of avant—garde art.

During the repair process, the designers decided to change the geometry of the window slopes. They were rounded and highlighted with moldings, so that the windows visually expanded, and there was more light. Some of the furniture, doors, partitions are made to order according to individual sketches of the authors of the project — this is how “partition doors” made of glass and metal appeared in the bedroom.

Custom-made Italian furniture and light complemented the space, placing accents. Memorabilia and paintings that are significant for the customer fit harmoniously into the interior.

“When all the new partitions were put up, the question arose about restoring the damaged ones and creating new stucco elements of the old building,” the designers say. — We decided to try to create a template based on the old plaster cornice and remove all the plaster stucco by hand. It turned out not bad: the new tool helped to restore and recreate the missing decor elements, and somewhere to come up with new forms. This solution also saved a significant part of the budget, as we happily avoided the purchase and installation of ready-made elements made of gypsum or polymer.”

Glass and metal partitions in the bedroom added daylight to the dressing room and shower room and expanded the combined bedroom unit. The designers managed to place a fireplace in the bathroom, which adds comfort to the room and makes it memorable.

It was decided to hide the functional cabinets in the corridor and in the children’s rooms by painting them to match the walls. Only the colors of the handles at the cabinets create intrigue — they repeat the color of the cabinet from the inside. “It was interesting to watch how customers were involved in the process,” the authors of the project recall. — Sometimes it seemed that we were very close in understanding each other. So a painting by an unknown author appeared in the apartment. We saw her in the workshop of our furniture makers and immediately assigned her a place in the corridor.”
