Glass house for collectors in England

The Texas company Specht Architects designed a minimalist house in Sheffield for customers who wanted to live in nature without parting with a collection of works of art

The house is called Casa Annunziata — Specht Architects believe that “Annunciation” is the most appropriate name for an immaculate minimalist space that houses a collection of works of art.

Casa Annunziata stands in the far part of the 1.8-hectare field, the driveway goes around the house, giving the opportunity to admire it from different angles, and this enhances the feeling of traveling to something extremely valuable. You move through a forest inhabited by deer and many birds, and then you find yourself on the edge of a large clearing, in the far part of which a low pavilion with floor-to-ceiling glass walls soars through which the field and forest shine through.

The one—storey pavilion with an area of 186 square meters with a thin floating roof protruding 4.5 meters from the walls, which obscures the interior, reducing the cost of cooling and heating, is sharply different from the previous housing of its owners — an old farmhouse built in the XVIII century – but will perform approximately the same functions: living space and private galleries with a changeable exposition.

The open space includes a central living area and two bedrooms on the edges. The vaults where the works of art are located are hidden behind walls decorated with white and gray plaster. The lighting is almost invisible — suspensions with transparent glass lampshades are selected for the dining area, in other areas the light is built in.

The dramatic contrast between modern architecture and classical art is especially strong in those rooms where they meet face to face. For example, in the dressing room, which habitually performs the functions of a laundry room and — quite unexpectedly — a gallery storeroom. The paintings in the trellis hanging opposite the clothes rack and the washing machine enhance the surreal feeling that the whole house evokes.
