In May 2022, the Golubitskoe Art Foundation opened an art residence. The project was developed by the architectural bureau “New”, placing on 60 sq. meters residential studio and workshop for artists

Designed by the architectural bureau “New”, the art residence is a multifunctional space with an area of 60 sq. m. meters built into the architecture of the existing winery complex. The interior design is based on local crafts by designer Alexandra Falishtynskaya.

Architects needed to combine two functional spaces on a small area: residential and working. The room in which the art residence is located is part of the existing complex of buildings on the territory of the “Golubitskoe Estate” and has almost through lighting due to circular arched glazing. In order to limit the illumination and protect the room from prying eyes through large windows, and at the same time create an additional workspace, it was decided to use movable partitions. As a result, the small room turned out to be cozy and functional, an ideal place for one resident to live and work. Additional bonus: panoramic views of the Azov Sea coast from the west and vineyards from the north.

“The art residence is conveniently located on the territory of the winery, surrounded by vineyards, which is not only aesthetically attractive, but should also strengthen the rapprochement of artists with the local culture, one of the foundations of which is winemaking,” says Alice Bagdonaite, chief curator of the Golubitskoe Art Foundation. “In addition, we wanted the local context to be present not only in the views from the window, but also in the furnishings, so we decided that the furniture in the art residence should be appropriate.” Designer Alexandra Falishtynskaya was invited to fill the artist’s house with modern design objects that carry a connection with the history and cultural traditions of the region.

Alexandra was the first resident of the Foundation working in the field of design, and devoted her stay at the residence to the study of local crafts and crafts. Initially, she studied the applied art of the Taman Peninsula at the end of the XVIII — mid-XX centuries, but during her stay in Golubitsky, the geography of her searches greatly expanded, covering the entire Kuban and parts of the Caucasus. Lace and embroidery found in the collection of the Felitsyn Museum in Krasnodar provided the basis for a geometric ornament designed for textiles in the design of the art residence.

“Our task was, on the one hand, to make the new drawing neutral and easy to perceive, and on the other hand, to preserve the deep symbolism inherent in historical references,” says Alexandra about working on a collection of textiles created specifically for this space. The ornament, developed by Alexandra together with Veronika Reznik and VR Studio, is a decomposition of a traditional pattern, geometric shapes truncated to primitive signs: a rhombus, a triangle, a cross. The main material is textured, unpainted linen.

Another important detail in the design of the residence was the tableware — the result of a collaboration with one of Russia’s oldest porcelain and faience factory “Chaika” in Krasnodar, which produced a service specially for the art residence. “Laconic, at first glance, the kit combines manual shaping and painting, authentic finishes and innovative glazes, while remaining a factory product ready for replication,” says Alexandra.
