Terry de Gunzburg is called the genius of cosmetics and the guru of color. She started her career in the beauty industry by accident. After graduating from medical school, Terri decided that the profession of a doctor was not for her, and signed up for cosmetology courses of the Karita sisters, the founders of the Carita brand of the same name. One day, due to the workload of all the masters, Terry was sent to a Vogue magazine photo shoot as a makeup artist.

Ginzburg’s work, her ability to experiment with color, while creating a very fresh and feminine makeup, made a splash. Soon Terri was appointed the leading makeup artist of the Carita Institute, and then the creative director of the Yves Saint Laurent cosmetics line. By the way, it was Terry who came up with the famous Touch Eclat concealer. And in 2001, the indefatigable Frenchwoman launched her own brand of decorative cosmetics and perfumes with the uncomplicated name by Terry.

A few years ago, Terry, along with her husband Jean de Ginzburg, a well-known biologist, decided to move from Paris to London, where they bought a house for themselves, which they entrusted to Jacques Grange to arrange.

Jacques Grange is called a design star and a designer of stars. A protégé of the legendary Madeleine Castaing, educated at prestigious Bull and Camondo schools, he made a name for himself in the early 1970s by decorating the castleYves Saint Laurent andPierre Bergé – Chateau Gabriel in Normandy. Since then, the list of famous Grunge clients has been regularly updated: his customers were Princess Caroline of Monaco, actress Isabelle Adjani, culinary genius Alain Ducasse. Among the decorator’s latest projects is the house of Jean and Terry de Ginzburg.

A fragment of the living room. The floor is lined with limestone from the Belgian province of Hainaut. The curved sofa-canape, designed by Jacques Grange, echoes the Napoleon III round armchairs from Madeleine Castin. Between them is a coffee table by Guy de Rougemont. On the wall is a painting by Francis Bacon.

Jean and Terry are both known as passionate collectors of contemporary art. They moved their impressive collection from Paris to London. There are many masterpieces in it that many world museums could envy: works by Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois. However, Grunge was not surprised by all this.

“I wasn’t blinded by these works of art,” he recalls. — I made up my “recipe” for the interior right away: a little modesty, a little eclecticism and a pinch of shocking!” And adds: “The owners have excellent taste, I do not argue. But that doesn’t mean they could do without a decorator. Women who have enough taste to dress at Yves Saint Laurent, after all, do not sew their own dresses. It’s the same with the design. A professional is needed here.”

The dining room is decorated in brown tones with several bright accents. Around the table by Georges Jouve chairs by Jean Royer. Above the table is a Murano glass chandelier, Venini.

The tone in this small living room is set by a painting by the Cuban artist Vifredo Lama. A round table in the form of a drum is the work of Eugene Prince, a chair upholstered in terracotta color is from Jean Royer, a coffee table is from Georges Jouve. On the table is a bronze sculpture of Tatiana Truve “Boots”. The sofa-canape is made according to a sketch by Jacques Grange.

Grunge, with his thirty-five years of experience, has enough professionalism to satisfy any wishes of customers, especially since the five-story space allowed any excesses. So Terry wanted to have a “luxurious bathroom”. Why not? “At first I thought about the neo—Byzantine style,” says Grunge. — But in the end we settled on something like Cleopatra’s chambers from an old Hollywood film by Cecil de Mille. I spied a zigzag floor drawing in Syria. Take a look at the hinges of the wall cabinets: jewelry work, they were made to order in a workshop for the manufacture of products from precious metals.”

The owners’ bathroom. The floor is lined with slabs of white and blue marble, and the walls are ceramic tiles with a relief pattern in the form of honeycombs. The chest of drawers under the sink is made of silvered bronze according to the sketches of Jacques Grange.

“The hostess asked for a “luxurious bathroom.” As a result, it turned out something like Cleopatra’s chambers”

Sandra Davolio’s porcelain sculptures are on display on a chest of drawers inlaid with different types of wood from Jean Royer, with a painting by Robert Riemann above it. The wall is finished with natural oak.

The house is filled from bottom to top with art objects, but at the same time it looks less like a museum. Antique furniture from Art Deco masters Jean-Michel Frank and Jean Royère, objects of Grunge itself and works of modern art are combined with each other in a relaxed, almost casual, but in fact carefully thought out order.

“Other museums could envy the collection of contemporary art collected by the Ginzburgs”

The floors of dark Belgian limestone – the same in all rooms – visually unite the different spaces. The result is an interior in which there is no contrivance or ostentation. It seems to have arisen by itself, without any effort on anyone’s part. “The aerobatics of the decorator’s work is when it is not visible at all,” the Ginzburg couple say. “Or when this work is seen only by those who are able to appreciate it,” Grange grins.

The hostess’s dressing room is adjacent to the bathroom. The floor is also lined with white and blue marble. The doors of the cabinets made of maple wood are finished with embossed leather with gilding.
