Interior by Patricia Urquiola for a Russian ballerina

The star of Spanish design Patricia Urquiola rarely designs private apartments. But for the Russian ballerina Svetlana Irzhavskaya, she made an exception!

Ballerina Svetlana Irzhavskaya feels at home in any country. She was born in Russia, made her career in Poland, and met the man of her dreams in Italy.

The fact that she commissioned a designer from Spain to design her apartment in Milan is not even surprising. Surprisingly, another thing is that Patricia Urquiola herself agreed to finish the home, which rarely takes on private interiors. She just doesn’t have enough time for this.

Patricia designs furniture for many companies (including B&B Italia, Moroso, Driade) and actively designs hotels and boutiques. Svetlana and her entrepreneur husband knew Patricia precisely as a subject designer. “I just love her style — bright, original and very feminine,” the ballerina admits.

I rarely take on private orders: I don’t like to adapt to the whims of customers. But in this project everything was different

Almost all household items in this house are hidden behind the blind facades of cabinets. Only firewood for the fireplace is stored on an open shelf. Tropicalia wicker chairs are designed by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso. The carpet, also from Moroso, is woven according to Patricia’s sketches on the island of Sardinia.

According to the couple, this style could not be better suited for the apartment where they live together with their little daughter Vasilisa. The designer was even embarrassed by such passionate adoration.

We chose mainly Patricia’s objects. She was not very happy — she was afraid that she would get a total look

“When it came to buying furniture, we naturally chose mostly Patricia’s objects, which she was not very happy with — she was afraid that it would turn out to be a total look.” But in the end, Urquiola’s fears disappeared without a trace, as, indeed, her long-standing dislike of working with private customers.

“When I collaborate with furniture brands, they give me complete freedom for creative searches,” explains Urquiola. — After all, my task is to expand the horizons of the company, to bring something new to its assortment. In private projects, everything is different: the flight of fancy is limited by the needs of the client. I have to fulfill his dreams, not my ideas. We have to solve everything together from the very beginning, and this process is often painful. But while working with Svetlana, everything went surprisingly smoothly. As a result, this communication has given us both a lot.”

Built-in storage systems are located along the entire corridor.

The public area of the apartment has an enfilade layout — a long corridor connects a small “informal” living room, an open kitchen, a dining area and a second living room with a fireplace, designed for crowded parties.

For security reasons, a pixel pattern was applied to the glass wall between the corridor and the dining room.

The space is divided into zones by two vertical blocks covered with polished cement, audio and video equipment is hidden in their depths. At the end of the suite there is a private area — a children’s room and a master bedroom with a bathroom and a dressing room adjacent to it. All surfaces are finished with pure Italian sophistication: expensive natural materials (leather, onyx, wood), translucent glass, muted colors.

Bedroom. Behind the headboard of the Clip bed designed for Moroso, Patricia placed a screen with a bright pattern. She chose translucent tulle for the windows to avoid excessive variegation.

There were also humorous details typical for the designer: on the glass wall, instead of warning signs “beware, glass”, there are funny figures of aliens. Such an interior will not bother the owners for a long time and certainly will never get old. Guaranteed by Patricia Urquiola!

The owners did not skimp on onyx and expensive wood species: the interior was decorated “for centuries”
