Ironic scandi in the Lilyhammer bar

A bar with sorrel shots, Nordic cuisine and Scandi-inspired interiors has opened in the center of Moscow. The design was invented by Natalia Ivanova, who chose a blue-and-white palette for the furniture, inclusions of warm wood and unusual details like … a real Swedish wall!

The first Lilyhammer bar opened in 2019, and its popularity prompted Yevgeny Goncharov (the Lounge bar) and Ilya Stepanenko (the Borough Raclette bar) to think about a second, but more spacious place – with traditional Nordic cuisine.

“Together with Ilya and Evgeny, we have already made the first Lilyhammer in the Trade Union bar cluster. There it turned out to create a small cozy corner with tinctures. We also used Scandinavian motifs, but due to the small area we could not walk around. The first bar was more teenage, hooligan, with a gray barn board. And this time the guys asked to do something more mature, adult – so not only painted walls appeared here, but also “cabinet” oak panels,” says designer Natalia Ivanova from Yellowline Studio about the interior concept.

The design of the second bar, located on Bolshaya Lubyanka, is made in the popular Scandi style, and one of the main elements that beat the stereotypes about Nordic culture was a wooden Swedish wall right in the middle of the hall. The emphasis was placed on the ceiling and bright blue walls of Electric Blue Lemonade shade. The center of the composition was an open bar, as if made of ice cubes.

“The bar counter in the first bar imitated ice, an iceberg, there were more broken lines, here we added more square and cubic elements. We kept the Nordic spirit and left a touch of ironic reading of the “Scandinavian design”, but added a couple of cliches — a Swedish wall and some “Ikea” motifs. In Lilyhammer 2.0, the area and high ceilings made it possible to make a more neat, clean and verified space” — Natalia says.

“We left the bar area in the same place where the previous tenant had it. We replaced the facade of the counter with hollow foam concrete blocks to create the feeling of Lego or some kind of designer,” says the designer, “And made another bar area: an island with beer taps. It stands alone, you can sit behind it and, like on an icebreaker, go on a fun trip on Friday evening.”

The name Lilyhammer refers not so much to the small Norwegian town that hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics, as to the 2012 American-Norwegian television series called Lillehammer. A portrait of the main character, mobster Frank “The Dodger” Tagliano, looks after all the guests from the wall of the bar.
