The American design star came up with bright eclectic interiors for the new Downtown LA Proper hotel in Los Angeles and used 136 types of tiles in the decoration!

At the beginning of 2022, the famous American decorator and designer Kelly Westler (Kelly Wearstler) designed a suite with a swimming pool at the Downtown LA Proper design Hotel. And now I have completed work on the rest of the hotel’s interiors — from the entrance area to the rooms, choosing bright shades, works by local artists and as many as 136 different types of tiles!

The 148-room hotel is located in the “fashionable” part of the city, in the building of a former private club designed by the architectural studio Curlett & Beelman back in the 1920s. The company The Kor Group, engaged in the reconstruction of the hotel, contacted the Kelly Westler bureau so that the interiors meet the concept of a design hotel – a bright place with an unusual and memorable atmosphere.

While working on the masterpieces, the designer drew inspiration from the creative, bohemian atmosphere of this Los Angeles neighborhood, local traditions, as well as Mexican, Moroccan, Spanish and Portuguese design. “My reference point for Proper hotels is always the location, so Downtown LA Proper required bold and eclectic solutions,” she says (Kelly has been designing hotels of this chain for years).

“Since the design is largely inspired by the local community and the history of the area, I chose deep warm shades for the decor to tell about the rich culture and local history. In the interiors, we used 136 different types of non—standard tiles – from vintage to custom-made.”

Visitors enter the hotel through the ornate arch of the building, on the sides of which are placed column-like cacti in rustic pots. There is also a reception desk created by ceramist Morgan Peck. In the entrance area, the original pink and white tiles were preserved on the floor, and the ceiling was decorated with a multicolored fresco. The painting was done by the artist Abel Macias, who used flora and fauna from Mexican fairy tales.

This eclectic approach is reflected in the design of the rooms. Kelly combined contrasting elements in the interiors of the rooms, for example, headboards with large patterns and smooth wooden floors, and chose spectacular shades of charcoal, lilac, dusty blue, umber and ecru for the walls.
