What should the “Russian tower” look like in the XXI century? A wooden house with carved architraves, a porch, a “light” under the roof, but at the same time equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable suburban life of a modern person, and even more! This is about what the customers of this project in Suzdal wanted when they came to the architects of the FORM studio. In addition, given the rich history of this ancient Russian city, the house had to fit seamlessly into the panorama of Suzdal and refer to its traditional architecture.

Starting work on this project, the architects spent a lot of time at the Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life in Suzdal.

There was an abandoned building on the site — a large estate in the neoclassical style, which was being built as a hotel. The inspection showed that under the layers of rotten lining there is a strong skeleton of foam blocks. He served as a constructive basis for the house and suggested the idea for shaping. “We have a model of the street of the old city — three wooden huts stand close to each other,” the architects say. — They are united by a light neutral volume of foam block, which gives the thread some distance. The modern volume gathers these wooden houses on a single axis: starting as a separate white monolith, it continues in the gaps between the “historical” facades until it leaves a narrow window-loophole on the Alexander Monastery.”

“The wood from the facades goes inside the house, intertwining with untouched fragments of foam blocks, and the archetypal elements of the Russian house — a large stove, a hearth, touching woven carpets – are adjacent to iconic furniture design items. Such an organized “randomness” of the situation creates a charming and hospitable image of a country cottage.”

The relief decor inside the house enters into a dialogue with the carvings on the facades.

The living room is combined with the dining room. The central place in the dining area is occupied by a stove, the lining of which harmoniously combines with the lampshades of Formakami lamps, designed by Jaime Iona for & Tradition, above the dining table.

“Like facades, the interior is in constant dialogue with its surroundings. The windows are cut so that you can see a different landscape from each room — you can arrange a city tour without leaving home. The guides of this trip are the works of classics of painting and modern artists. They mark the key points of the interior and form the dramaturgy of a complex space.”

Many items are custom made. This includes a bookshelf in the living room, a rattan screen in one of the bedrooms, and elegant railings for stairs of complex geometry, which were made by a furniture workshop from Vladimir Anonym Furniture. There was also a place in the house for the author’s design of Olga Treyvas and Vera Odyn: Olga’s “embroidered” furniture from the Emma series and Vera’s shelf resembling a tree mushroom from the Forest series made an excellent company of Cassina, Hay and Vitra furniture.

“We tried to make each room have its own character,” the designers say. — This is manifested even in small things, for example, in the arrangement of books on the shelves. So each room has its own “internal” name, for example, “Fiction”, “Adventure”, “Travel”.”

“We hope this project will show by its example how an architect can work with historical heritage and remain modern at the same time”

“The funny thing is that the original purpose of the old manor constantly makes itself felt. We are regularly asked if it is possible to rent a room here for the weekend, although we emphasize everywhere that this is a private house, not a guest house.”
