Modern Haussmann style in a Paris apartment

This apartment is located in a house erected during the “renovation” of Paris in the second half of the XIX century by Baron Haussmann, and the owners asked the designers to preserve this atmosphere

This 150 square meter apartment, located in an Haussmann-style house in the 17th arrondissement of Paris, has retained its charm — even though it has not been renovated for 30 years. The new owners asked the Murs & Merveilles bureau, under the direction of architect Marie Le Magueresse, to rebuild the space, while not depriving it of the charm thanks to which they chose this apartment.

“We tried to use literally every centimeter, paying great attention to the layout of all the rooms. To begin with, the hall was expanded; there was an idea to get rid of the rounded wall, but then they decided to leave everything as it is and attached a custom-made bench to it. Then we painted the wall in a complex gray-blue color Bleu Tahoe — we borrowed this shade from the historical panorama “Eden”, reprinted by the wallpaper manufactory Le Grand Siècle,” says Marie Le Mageress.

The entrance to the living room is separated from the hall by a small patterned partition — so as to zone the space, but let in light. The custom-made bookcase and TV stand are also painted in Tahoe Blue, which slightly dampens the pomposity of the marble fireplace. The same details flow smoothly into the main dining room: moldings and rounded “grooves” in the decoration of the long sideboard, gray-blue, light tulle on the windows. In another, more intimate dining area adjacent to the kitchen, the mood is set by bright vintage wallpaper and a custom-made sofa, the shape of the back of which rhymes with their floral motif.

The entrance to the kitchen is separated by a door with the same pattern as the partition between the hall and the living room — but here it closes. Wallpaper, vintage, sofa made to order.

“In the master bedroom, we made the headboard to order and covered the walls with lime plaster of a pink shade borrowed from plants from wallpaper. A more delicate pink was chosen for the decoration of a large set, including a headboard, a dressing room and a library workplace, for the owners’ daughter’s room,” says Marie Le Mageress, emphasizing that the main thing they were striving for was to make the space whole, as comfortable as possible and at the same time reminiscent of the era of the restructuring of Paris – Ottomanization.
