Mysterious Island: how to place everything you need on 36 m2

In the Elements studio project, everything — from the layout to the color of the walls — is not quite standard. And the result was unexpected

The kitchen was replaced with a large island, where a hob, dishwasher and washing machine, sink, faucet with filter, storage of cutlery and dishes and even an open storage system for wine were placed. The refrigerator and oven with microwave function were moved to a separate kitchen column, adding a secret cabinet for a kettle and toaster.

“We have been waiting for a customer for a completely black interior for a long time,” says Maria Zueva and Maria Kasatkina from Elements studio. They say that a teacher comes when a student is ready to meet him. Apparently, the same thing happens with customers: they voice exactly the task that the designer wants and can perform.

Here, the designers and the customer were certainly lucky: he saw his future interior as modern, functional and in dark colors. For a small apartment, this is an unexpected decision, but a reasonable one: the black color dissolves the walls, it becomes impossible to understand the true dimensions of the room, especially if it has large windows and suitable light.

In addition, the customer preferred natural materials everywhere: the headboard of the bed made of genuine leather, textiles on the windows made of one hundred percent linen, wooden blinds, parquet floors; he actively participated in the selection of finishing materials and closely followed the process of painting the walls. Painting really required additional attention, as the black color turned out to be very capricious.

The apartment is small, only 36 square meters, so it is filled with all sorts of “chips” that make life more convenient. For example, all drawers and doors in the kitchen are equipped with electric drives. It was not easy to do this on the island due to size restrictions. The device of electric drives required additional space, including due to the lack of handles, and the struggle was not even for centimeters, but for millimeters.

The hob is also “with a secret”: it has a built-in hood that runs down the back wall of the cabinet and exits in the basement with milling.

The project was called Total black — that is, everything in the interior is dark, almost black, and only the lighting on the ceiling and at the head of the bed adds accent ochre tones. The facades of all cabinets in the living area and in the kitchen are made in oak veneer, painted black by the manufacturer.

Bedroom. The bed was equipped with an accent leather headboard, which is framed on the left by tubular brass lamps, and on the right by a voluminous table lamp on a bedside table. It turns out an asymmetry that balances the entire interior. “We love this effect and almost always use it,” the authors of the project explain.

The front wall is the only one that is not black. “This wall is designed to look like bare concrete,” the designers explain, “we have been choosing the shade and the application option for a long time to achieve a natural effect.”

The engineering board was also not chosen the first time, in the showroom its shade was blue, and the authors of the project took a sample just in case, not expecting it to fit. But in the apartment, the color suddenly opened up in a new way, it once again reminds how much depends on lighting.

The dressing room is represented by a combination of cabinets with veneered facades and glass doors. All the doors are hinged, three meters high. “Of course, this puts many masters in a stupor, but not ours,” the authors of the project are proud. — The fact is that the entire section with glass doors is a single space with a width of 1600 mm, on which the swing doors are attached. In addition, all internal shelves had to be without partitions, and a block with drawers in the entire width of the cabinet — without supports! It’s hard to imagine, but this cabinet exists and reliably serves its owner.”

The storage systems in the hallway are thought out to the smallest detail: the wardrobe for outerwear and cleaning items is hidden behind veneered facades three meters high, and casual clothes are stored behind glass doors.

The most difficult object to manufacture in this apartment is a freestanding sink, it is cast from architectural concrete by craftsmen from Designmixtura and weighs 50 kg. The difficulty lies in creating a special mold, as well as the subtleties of working with concrete mix. “We need experience gained over the years,” the designers explain, “so different concrete products from different manufacturers cannot be the same, everyone has their own “chips”.

The cabinet behind the sink in the bathroom is another author’s development. Visually, this is one cabinet with blind facades and a mirror in the middle. But in fact, it is divided into three parts, which are united by a single mirror canvas from floor to ceiling. The upper part of the cabinet is single, the shelves are through: what is behind the mirror can be reached from any side.

The number of high-altitude mirrors in this project is a record: designers recall that their delivery and unloading were watched with bated breath. Of course, there were some incidents: one mirror was brought the wrong size, the other was broken during unloading. But all unpleasant surprises have been overcome, mirrors have taken their place and play an important role in creating the magical atmosphere that the authors of the project sought to create here. “Contrary to everyone’s opinion about dark spaces, this is not an apartment where you want to be sad or suffer,” they emphasize, “even though it is completely black, including the ceiling.”
