North Wind: a house near St. Petersburg

Combine Scandinavia and Japan with modern architecture and the works of Russian designers — and you will have a fashion house in tune with St. Petersburg nature, according to architect Alexandra Agapova and designer Margarita Pushkareva (A&R interiors bureau)

Interior design began when the house was already under construction, but the layout turned out to be quite successful, and the designers managed with a small adjustment of the partitions. “As soon as we saw the house, we wanted to make an interior that would emphasize its architecture,” says Alexandra Agapova. — Therefore, the interior space is solved by large planes and volumes.”

The area is 190 sq. m. — as a large apartment, so it was important to create an organic interior, combining the rooms familiar to the apartment and the rooms needed in the house. A second light, a decorative wall with a fireplace, a laconic black volume of the staircase space, thoughtful lighting and a cozy sofa area make it multifunctional. At the same time, the room is not overloaded due to maintaining a balance between clean space and decorative elements.

The entire second floor was conceived as a place for relaxing and socializing. There are two bedrooms, a men’s study and an open room with a soft area for family leisure and watching movies. In the master bedroom, by replacing stationary partitions with glass, it was possible to create a single space with a bathroom and a dressing room, adding air and volume to a small room.

The customer fully trusted the designers, which, on the one hand, gave a lot of freedom, and on the other hand, the tasks had to be formed based on the ideas of the designers themselves about the needs and taste of the owner of the house. The only wish concerned the color scheme and the use of concrete and wood. The study and the staircase are solved in black, in the master bedroom the decorative role is assigned to wooden panels, in the bathrooms large surfaces of stone and plaster are connected. A feature of the project was the maximum use of furniture and light, designed by the designers themselves, and items from Russian manufacturers. “The most unusual thing was the lamp above the stairs. We wanted to create a unique item that would reflect the customer’s hobbies, the main one of which is rare cars,” says Margarita Pushkareva. “Inside each suspension is a glass made in the shape of a car headlight.”

Despite the minimalism and austerity of the interior, notes of Scandinavian comfort, Japanese brevity and natural materials create a calm atmosphere of a country house, consonant with old-fashioned places near St. Petersburg.
