St. Petersburg book publishing house “Polyandria” has opened its first bookstore in Moscow. He occupied the first floor of a former apartment building built in 1908, which has recently been restored. Manor Manor, or “house with ears”, was built according to the project of architect Mikhail Kaverinsky. The building with a red brick facade is made in the style of romantic Art Nouveau.

Polyandria shared its new space with the Letters coffee shop. Darina Yakunina, the founder of the publishing house, commissioned designer Ilya Gulyants to design it. “I wanted to create an interior where the books themselves would act as the main characters and nothing would distract visitors from meditative immersion in this special world,” says Ilya.

The bookstore has an almost square shape with windows on three sides, due to which there is always a lot of light inside. The zoning of the space was solved due to bookshelves on wheels and the central dominant in the interior — an oval table designed to order. The designer managed to create an air space with a Scandinavian mood, where the zones of the store and cafe competently complement each other.

“Any public project is developed for visitors taking into account the specifics of the place. In this case, through the nuances of a combination of colors and textures, I managed to create a memorable interior, and at the same time reflect my design vision,” Ilya emphasizes.

“For the bookstore and cafe, it is very important to work with light, local lighting of shelves, shelves, an abundance of tactile pleasant textures and rhythm created by the correct geometry of the space. For this project, we invited light architects from the Wavelength Studio and sound professionals to collaborate to create the right atmosphere.”

All items except the chairs were custom designed specifically for the project. Chairs were found in Scandinavian brands: these are Muuto, Hay, Hirtshals Savvaerk of the 1970s, Vitra cork stools. Special attention was paid to the lamps above the bar — they are made of brass and matte plexiglass. Round tables are decorated with glazed azure tiles — it was brought from a workshop in Yekaterinburg.

The bar and the cash desk are finished with copper, which was given the necessary texture with the help of artistic etching. The teardrop-shaped elements of the pattern are echoed by the shape of the lamps above it and the Zieta mirror on the wall. The ensemble is completed by a massive oval oak table in the center of the hall — it has become the dominant feature around which the entire interior unfolded.
