Renovated 1940s House with Mint Kitchen in Melbourne Design 01.04.2022 Architect Lisa Breeze renovated the 1940s house, preserving the original color scheme and adding elements characteristic of that era Photo Katie Schussler This brick townhouse, built in the 1940s, has always belonged to the same family. Today, the great-grandnephew of the first owner lives here, who has great respect for the history of the house. The building was in excellent condition and in many respects retained its beautiful original features, but the interior required major repairs. To adapt it to the standards of modern life, the owner turned to the architectural bureau Lisa Breeze Architect. The main work was carried out in the back of the house, where the team designed a new extension. It houses an open kitchen-dining room with panoramic windows overlooking the courtyard. According to Lisa Lisa Breeze, such a layout is not typical for houses of this period, however, this was the most difficult task — to choose which elements of heritage to work with and which to abandon for comfort. For example, the architect kept the color of the original kitchen and supplemented the new upper cabinets with a corrugated glass showcase, which was also used to make a shower partition. Square glazed ceramic tiles and windows with steel frames were also “borrowed” from that era.
