“A modern interior prolongs youth,” the customer told the designers at the meeting. He was making an apartment for his wife’s mom and wanted the interior to be functional and smart. How does this manifest itself? Read the article to find out. 

Customer and tasks 

This small apartment is located in a Moscow residential quarter, and the customer was a man who wanted to equip the interior for his wife’s mother. To do this, he turned to the designers of the Spacetime studio Anna Surkova and Ilya Mishin.

The customer had several important wishes. The first is a smart interior where you can remotely adjust lighting, temperature, water supply and even access to the apartment. He also asked to install a video camera in the kitchen-living room. This was necessary in order to react quickly in case mom becomes ill, and also to quickly check her condition. The second is a round dining table, which could also become a workplace. 

Redevelopment

Initially, the apartment was a eurodome: kitchen-living room, bedroom, separate bathroom. The designers made a small but important change in the layout, which eventually increased the functionality of the apartment. 

The partition between the bedroom and the kitchen-living room was removed and a new structure was built. The place where the door used to be is now a closet. And a glass partition with smart glass separates the bedroom from the kitchen-living room. This is a smart technology by pressing a button on the remote control, you can adjust the transparency of the glass: make it completely permeable or tinted white. Transparent mode allows you to make the apartment lighter and more airy, because both the kitchen-living room and the bedroom have windows, and their natural light floods all areas. 

There is a similar door in the partition, it is located near the window. And also the blind part, built of a metal frame, deepened into the screed, sewn with plywood and drywall. This technology made it possible to make the wall as strong and solid as possible, it can withstand the weight of the TV stand, both TVs from the bedroom and living room, as well as the weight of the glass partition itself. 

Finishing

Paint was chosen for the walls, and an engineering board was placed on the floor. The kitchen and hallway areas are highlighted with ceramic granite, so it’s more practical. Several types of porcelain stoneware were used in the bathroom. The shower room is lined with granite for wood and gray stone, the same gray stone on the floor, and the sink area is decorated with embossed granite with a natural texture. The wall with the installation of the toilet was decorated with MDF panels. The authors of the project specify that they designed the joint with granite through a metal profile so that the panels do not swell from the humidity of the tile. An important solution is a shower area without a threshold, but on a small elevation, it is convenient for an aged person.

We chose a stretch ceiling with a shadow profile. It looks like a painted coating due to the matte texture and white color. 

The accent zone was the wall behind the sofa. It is decorated with MDF panels for wood, which alternate with light panels. The color of the panels is identical to the wooden trim of the window slopes. In the bedroom, in addition to the paint, high mirrors were used in the bed area. They reflect light from the window and help to visually expand a small space.

Furniture and storage systems

Thoughtful storage systems are part of a functional interior. Designers have provided places for the installation of cabinets at the planning stage. So, in the hallway there is a hanging cabinet with facades in the color of the walls. A place was left under it in order to push the pouf, as well as put casual shoes. Also in the entrance area there is a utility closet, it is just in the place where the door to the bedroom used to be. Inside the cabinet there is a column of washing and drying machines and storage shelves. On the bedroom side it is a closet for things, but there the storage system continues, occupies the entire wall.

The kitchen looks compact, but the designers have provided all the necessary appliances, including a dishwasher, a built-in oven and a refrigerator with an ice maker. In the bathroom, in addition to the bedside table under the sink, there are built-in shelves for various small things. There is a collector cabinet above the toilet, and a water heater is also located there. 

Smart Home System

An important wish of the customer was a “smart” interior that could be adjusted remotely. So, it starts literally from the threshold with an electronic lock of the entrance door, which can be opened or closed from a smartphone and in the same way provide access to family members. But they also left the classic lock, you can open it from the corridor side, from the back side of the wrapper. So the designers also solved the problem of smells and cold air stretching from the entrance.

All the lights are connected to the smart home system. The designers have thought of lighting at different levels: linear tracks in the living room, which are also connected to suspensions over the dining table, kitchen lighting, spot light over the kitchen, suspensions in the bedroom, hidden lights in the bathroom. A camera is installed in the kitchen-living room so that in emergency cases the customer can check the condition of the mother remotely. The whole system is hidden behind a mirror in the hallway.

Most people think that if the quadrature is small, then the apartment will be made easier and faster, but the opposite is true! Due to the limited area, it is impossible to carry out parallel work and it is difficult to do the layout, since you need to fit everything to the millimeter.
