“There will always be joy and fun here,” Marie—Lise Féry, a French designer and founder of the Magic Circus Editions brand of lamps, made a wish before moving to a new house in the vicinity of Lyon. Completely restored by the French architect Francis Juillard, the mansion, surrounded by greenery, was ready to receive her — by luck or by the dictates of fate — just before the first lockdown.

The only rightful ruler of the interiors of Marie-Liz’s house remains color, which is not at all surprising if we recall the chandeliers, floor lamps and sconces created by her. Joyful, saturated shades replace each other in bright combinations and already in the hallway they are ready to plunge into the world of dreams and fantasies in shades of burgundy, pink and ochre. But this is just the first scene in an improvised theater, followed by a green living room that seems to echo the natural landscapes outside the windows, or an ultramarine-blue library-rotunda. And in the center of each room-casket are lamps created by Marie-Liz, sometimes grotesque, always unexpected, bizarrely frivolous, playing with form and balance.

“I love making surprises, directing scenes, telling stories,” she says. To complement the one that unfolded in her house, no one could be better than the decorator Claude Cartier (Claude Cartier). It was in her showroom, a real treasure trove of Lyon, that the designer found furniture and decor for the future interior. So, in the master bedroom, the green velvet upholstered headboard, inspired by the furniture of Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, echoes the curves of plaster installations, and yellow armchairs stand out with bright accents against the background of curtains. In the living-dining room, everything returns to the shape of a circle, which is repeated in the details of lamps, coffee tables and carpets. Finally, the severity of black marble in the kitchen decoration is balanced by frivolous floral prints, and it turns out to be quite easy to turn a couple of dining tables into one common with the arrival of guests — the final scene of this production. And this is the best cure for despondency, Marie-Liz is sure. www.magic-circus.fr
