The laws of nature: the apartment of designer Anastasia Komarova

Designer Anastasia Komarova invites you to her harmonious world — an apartment of 60 square meters in Moscow, which even has its own name: the owners affectionately call their house SHU

We moved into this apartment in the midst of quarantine and it was like we were out of town! Of course, this moment was preceded by six months of construction, but my husband and I seemed to foresee that the interior would literally become our refuge. From the very beginning, the purity of perception of space and abundance of air, natural materials, thoughtful and functional storage systems, the connection of interior and exterior were important to us.

The 1960 house looks out with tall windows into a quiet courtyard, and huge trees knock branches into the apartment. We chose materials as close to nature as possible: smooth wooden furniture facades and rustic boards on the floor, linen curtains and rough wall surfaces, delicate graphics and handmade ceramics.

The living room is connected to the kitchen, and a small window is made into the bathroom, as was customary in houses of that time. The wooden facades of the kitchen and study merge with the rest of the decoration, so the functional areas do not seem like a foreign body in the harmonious space of the living room. The table stands on the central axis of the room, and it was important for us to maintain a view of both windows when placing it. So there is a complete feeling that you are on the terrace of a country house. In addition, we still have a very human third floor, when you don’t look at everything from a bird’s—eye view – I really like this “earthiness”, at eye level you see all the beauty of trees, their power and strength.

In the bedroom, everything is very simple, just what you need — along the entire wall there is a spacious closet to the ceiling, divided into sections: men’s, women’s and work, in which I store samples of fabrics, stones, wood, etc. It is painted in the color of the walls, and you do not immediately notice it, despite its impressive dimensions. We have made internal windows between the bedroom and the living room, but Roman blinds can be lowered and sleep peacefully if one of us goes to bed later or gets up earlier. A bed with “ears” gives a feeling of security, and a branch from a sawn old apple tree reminds of the upcoming summer season.

However, we already spend half a year on the balcony — we have breakfast, dinner by candlelight, work, read or just get high in the sun with our eyes closed, listening to the singing of birds and the distant laughter of children from the neighboring yard. Less than a year has passed, and the house has become almost a native person for us — the space has received its name SHU, and we even greet him when we come.
