British students will be engaged in the project of the Central Telegraph

The development company Vos’hod, which is engaged in the reconstruction of the Central Telegraph building in Moscow, invited students of the British Higher School of Design to develop a concept of public spaces

The David Chipperfield Architects bureau has stopped working in Russia, but the company’s main project — the reconstruction of the Central Telegraph in Moscow — continues to develop. The development company Vos’hod offered to design the public spaces of the legendary building… to students of the British Higher School of Design! For young people studying at the Interior Design course, such cooperation is one of the first briefings from a real customer and a chance to take part in a major international project.

“We are glad to be involved in the project of the revival of the Central Telegraph and to work on such an ambitious and important task for the city. As part of the collaboration, British students will offer their concepts for the design of shopping galleries, art spaces, courtyards, places for recreation and leisure. I am sure that participation in such projects is important both for young aspiring professionals and for companies implementing projects that are socially significant for the urban environment,” says Elena Babkina, curator of the project and the educational program “Interior Design” of the BVSD.

The heart of the project is its spacious courtyard, which is designed to become a new point of attraction in the city. Like any public space, it should take into account the interests of different categories of citizens, as well as provide comfort and variability of use at different times of the day.

The British students work on various aspects of public space — from small architectural forms and street furniture design to the arrangement of places for events and retail design. One of the conditions of the task is to preserve the authenticity of the place: the space must necessarily emphasize the connection of times, referring guests to the rich history of the Central Telegraph.
