Art Nouveau house, light bay windows, historical stucco and natural shades — what else do you need for an apartment in the Scandinavian spirit

This apartment is located in one of the most beautiful places in the center of Gothenburg — in the tower of a 1911 house built in the spirit of national romanticism, on Skonegatan. It has preserved historical details: expressive stucco molding, ceiling sockets, doors with old glazing, herringbone floors, deep bay windows and high baseboards. A year ago, the interiors were painstakingly renovated, adding a modern design to the history of the house.

The owners sought to balance different eras in the interior — old doors, stucco and stained glass windows are adjacent to modern materials and furniture. Instead of the usual white color in Sweden, a softer sand color was chosen for most of the rooms, supporting it not only in the coloring of the walls, but also in the upholstery of furniture and textiles.

The owners paid special attention to the kitchen — it is quite spacious, with a kitchen island and a place for a dining table. Stylistically, they did not imitate historical styles, using modern smooth facades and cabinets with functional storage spaces from Marbodal.

The high cabinets housed an oven, a microwave oven and a wine refrigerator with two temperature modes, a refrigerator and a dishwasher.

High windows with restored wooden frames give the interiors a sufficient amount of light. A large mirror in the living room reflects the sun’s rays, making the room even brighter.

The apartment has two more bedrooms and a walk-through office adjacent to one of the rooms. The master bedroom is located in the tower part of the house, and the guest bedroom is in the next room with a round bay window and a small balcony overlooking a quiet street.

The old brickwork was preserved on the balcony, having insulated it with an infrared heating system. Although there is not much space, it was still possible to make a resting place with a table and a bench covered with a rug made of hand-woven textiles.

The enfilade layout, preserved by the owners, allows you to pass from the public part of the apartment (kitchen and living room) to private rooms — bedrooms and an office, the walls of which were painted in a gray-blue shade. It helps to create the right atmosphere for calm and focused work.

There is enough storage space in the hallway in the form of four built-in wardrobes. The radiator at the wall was covered with an elegant screen with slots for the outlet of warm air. Beautiful stained glass windows have been preserved since the construction of the house, in addition to the hallway, you can admire the stained glass windows in one of the bathrooms, letting light from the courtyard on the stairwell.

In the large bathroom, hexagons of Carrara marble were laid on the floor, and laconic white tiles were used on the walls. Instead of a bathroom, they made a shower room, and the vacant space was allocated for a laundry area with a washing machine and dryer.
