Modern East: stylized holiday apartments in Sochi

Designer Diana Kalinkina was inspired to create this interior by the architectural and park ensemble Alhambra, which is located in the south of Spain.

Customer and tasks

This apartment is located in the complex “Actor Galaxy” in Sochi. The owner, a young businessman, considered the object as commercial, for rent. And invited designer Diana Kalinkina to create an interior. The exterior of the complex hinted at a modern style of housing, but at the same time I wanted to create an atmosphere of a sunny city. We decided to design a modern interior with notes of Moorish style, and the inspiration was the real object of the architectural and park ensemble Alhambra in Granada, in the south of Spain.

Layout

Initially, the developer rented apartments without partitions, it was a trapezoidal volume with windows on one side and a spacious terrace. The status of apartments means enough freedom in the layout, there are no strict standards, as in the case of residential premises. It was necessary to equip two bedrooms, a common kitchen-living room area, bathrooms. And so they did.

At the entrance, a large wardrobe and a main bathroom were allocated. Then there is a shared kitchen-living room, where the kitchen area occupies the entrance part. One of the master bedrooms is isolated and located by the window. Her block also has its own dressing room and a small bathroom. It was more difficult to allocate a second bedroom, but it turned out. They decided to organize a small room in the center of the apartment, separating it from the kitchen-living room with walls with a sliding glass partition door. This is how natural light gets into the bedroom.

Finishing

Materials with reference to the chosen Moorish style were used in the decoration. In the common areas of the hallway, kitchen, living room, a decorative coating with a plaster texture was used on the walls, combining it with relief tiles, which decorated the apron, a wall in the dining area and two walls in the hallway.

Wallpaper was used in the bedrooms. In a small drawing with a seemingly blurred stripe. The big one also has stripes with uneven edges. But mosaics and shaped moldings were also laid out on the wall behind the bed. Parquet board and granite were used on the floor (in the hallway, in the kitchen). Bathrooms were decorated with tiles with different textures and relief.

Storage systems

The wardrobe, which is installed in the hallway, is designed not only for clothes, it is of increased depth, so that the collector cabinet and the flap are also hidden inside. The storage function in the bedroom is performed by a dressing room, and in the small bedroom there is a built-in wardrobe, which is made in a single composition with a bed for visual relief of a small space.

The kitchen set is linear, with all necessary appliances. Some of the upper cabinets have been replaced with open shelves, which also works for visual ease.

Furniture design is a combination of modern and stylized items. For example, the sofa and dining group, as well as the kitchen set are emphatically modern. At the same time, there is a wooden table with a figured base in the living room. In the small bedroom there is a soft headboard with a stitch and the facades of the wardrobe upholstered in the same way. There are tassels on the handles, which reminds of the oriental style. In the master bedroom, a bed with a soft headboard in the form of a pointed semicircle and curly bedside tables also refer to the aesthetics of the East.

In the hallway there is a spectacular console table and a mirror in a curly frame above it.

Lighting

The general lighting is thought out in the form of built-in spotlights and linear backlights. Decorative scenarios are solved in the form of a large chandelier above the dining table, a sconce on a long adjustable leg above the sofa, two symmetrical sconces with copper trim in the master bedroom, a small reader by the bed in the small bedroom and a sconce in the work area there.

We wanted to convey the atmosphere of a relaxing, sunny city, but we didn’t want to literally quote elements of the Moorish style, since the apartments are located in a modern residential complex. The customer still wanted a modern interior with elements of this style.
