Apartment of 70 square meters on Mosfilmovskaya

Apartment for a married couple with different stylistic preferences: a project by designer Maria Dadiani

The one-bedroom apartment is located in a brick house built in the 1970s near the Vorobyovy Gory Park. The customers invited designer Maria Dadiani here, already having a ready-made project in their hands and even starting construction. “The walls in the apartment were dismantled and partially erected, but many points from the already agreed project confused the customer so much that she did not want to implement it,” recalls Maria Dadiani. — After we discovered gross violations of technologies that would lead to serious financial expenses in the future, the owners made a difficult decision for them – to stop the construction and start designing from scratch. My task was not just to plan the space correctly, but also to take into account the different stylistic preferences of the spouses. An option that suited both sides was the interior in a calm “enveloping” color scheme with a hint of neoclassicism and Art Deco elements.”

A calm palette combined with an active wallpaper pattern sets an interesting sound and rhythm to the entire space. The barely noticeable matte gloss of the geometric pattern is perceived differently depending on the lighting: then complex shapes are highlighted, then their contour is emphasized. Customers often visit the United States, and the print depicting the Chrysler Corporation skyscraper, built in 1930 by architect William Van Alen, serves as a pleasant reminder of travel.

Replacing the gas stove with an electric one made it possible to combine an inconvenient elongated kitchen with a room, resulting in a spacious 30-meter kitchen-living room. When given the opportunity, the hosts like to cook together. Therefore, in addition to the main work surface, a kitchen island has appeared here, which logically divides the space into kitchen and living room zones.

The development of a storage system and an acoustic system in the living room was complicated by the fact that the entrance to the bedroom could not be moved, since the doorway is located in the load-bearing wall. The speakers were placed on different sides of the aisle, but at the same time they kept the most comfortable listening area in the center of the sofa. Audio equipment was mainly brought from the USA, so not only standard 220 V sockets for Russia were installed throughout the apartment, but also sockets for devices with a voltage of 110 V. The choice of cork flooring is not accidental either. One of the customer’s wishes was to use sound-absorbing surfaces. In the style of the interior, the choice fell on a cork coating with a neutral surface imitating bleached oak.

The customer’s ladies’ corner is designed in the spirit of the dressing room of great film stars, a print with a sketch of a stage costume from the Art Deco illustrator Roman Tyrtov, better known under the pseudonym Erte, maintains a theatrical atmosphere. The customer was actively interested and took part in the development of the project: it was her idea to use “theatrical light bulbs” at the table.

Due to the absence of doors and the possibility of penetration of natural light, a small hallway is perceived easily and a little solemnly, inviting guests to sit on a comfortable sofa or sit by the window with a view of Moscow.

The built-in wardrobe combines two functions: a storage place for outerwear and a mirror that allows you to see yourself in full growth. The invisible door leads to a small utility room, where there is a laundry room and additional storage space.

Having lived in the interior for almost a year, customers admit that they still admire every corner of their apartment. The designer managed to create a space for relaxation and leisurely enjoyment of life. And what else is needed in the crazy pace of today’s life, if not a place where you can relax and be yourself?
