A small, cozy garden on three acres near Copenhagen

Get acquainted with the Danish project, which once again clearly proves that small things can be bigger than they seem

Danish woman Ulla Bergstrom and her husband created a real green oasis in a small yard behind the house. Although the owners had only three acres at their disposal, thoughtful planting and the family’s love of flowers turned this place into a charming garden.

The garden house at the end of the plot was built by Lars, Ulla’s husband, Lars, as a reminder of a family vacation on Bornholm. Next to the house there is a shed for firewood and garden tools, completing the cozy area of the far part of the garden. Wild grapes are planted near the barn, twining its walls. Before entering the house, the hostess puts out pots with her favorite foxglove and ornamental herbs.

Along the hedge there is a path lined with concrete slabs. On the other side of it, a beautiful red maple is planted, and flower beds with flowers that are harmonious in shades smooth out the strict geometry of the path.

The terrace at the house offers a view of the entire garden. In the foreground are pots with plants, where the emphasis is on the shapes of flowers and the play of shades of purple. The path leads to the garden house, and the elongated line of the path is interrupted by a vertical accent — a willow-leaved pear (it is also called a Scandinavian olive), similar to an olive tree with its narrow and silver-gray leaves.

Common stork, cypress, mountain snake Hohe Tatra, Astrantia maxima and Pink Mist scabiosa are planted on a flower bed under a pear tree. The path is paved with tiles, so you can mow the hedge without stepping on the beds.

When Ulla and her husband started creating a garden 15 years ago, there were only a few old trees and shrubs on the plot. Some of the diseased trees were cut down by the owners, some were able to preserve — including tall lilacs.

There are many plants in the garden with flowers of Ulla’s favorite purple shade. Here, for example, pansies, Pink Mist scabiosa and Nachtvlinder sage grow.

In the shaded part of the garden there is a small round bowl with water: in addition to a decorative swarm, it helps local birds to get drunk in warm weather. Japanese maple, ferns, hellebore oriental Double Ellen White and a soft cuff are planted next to the “pond”.

In the family garden, Ulla is responsible for new ideas, the choice of plants and flowers, and Lars helps with construction work and pruning shrubs. In the photo — one of the owner’s favorites, a pink peony of the Sarah Bernhardt variety.

In the middle of the garden there is an area that the owners call a place for lunch. In good weather it is sunny here all day. Large pots with hosts create lush accents in shaded areas.

The Ghislaine de Feligonde rose blooms most of the summer and spreads its tart fragrance beyond the dining area.

Ulla’s favorite place is on a bench by a hedge between two trimmed box trees. Here she likes to sit in the midday shade and admire the garden.

The corner next to the exit from the house is actively used all year round. Fragrant roses and lush acebia frame this area with potted plants.
