Many of the works of the artist Georgia O’Keeffe were born out of her love for the otherworldly landscapes of New Mexico – with their dazzling sunlight, boundless sky and the harsh beauty of the desert landscapes of the highlands. She spent most of her time in these parts at her Abiquiu workshop house, located north of Santa Fe. And in this house, which the artist called Sol y Sombra (“Sun and shadow”), she moved towards the end of her life, two years before her death in 1986.

The house has a long history: it was built in 1937 in the Pueblo style — with rounded corners, thick plastered walls, exposed wooden beams and a stone floor. Around there is a lush garden with a Bodhi tree in a greenhouse — a gift from the Dalai Lama himself, who came to visit Paul Allen.
