As from an ordinary one – room apartment of 40 sq . m . m to make an apartment with a kitchen-living room, bedroom and dressing room: a real example Design 04.03.2022 Competent layout, basic colors and bright accents, budget solutions that look expensive, you will like this interior. Customers and tasks The owners of an apartment in a new residential complex in St. Petersburg are a young married couple. This is their first home, and even at the stage of choosing an apartment, they decided to contact the designer Olga Slugina to consult about the future layout. When the apartment was chosen, the couple entrusted Olga with the interior design. It was important for them to organize enough storage places. The couple is fond of skiing and has two sports sets, including special clothes; plan the space so as to squeeze the maximum out of the available space. “We want our square meters to reflect the inner world, lifestyle and be perfect,” Olga quotes her customers. Redevelopment Initially, it was a standard one-bedroom apartment with a small kitchen, an elongated room with a balcony and separate bathrooms. Thanks to the redevelopment, it was possible to mix a bedroom, a kitchen-living room with a dining area, a separate dressing room on 40 square meters. How was it done? The partition between the kitchen and the living room was removed. The kitchen set was made angular, but they acted unconventionally and brought part of the kitchen to the area of the corridor. A bedroom was allocated near the window, separated from the kitchen-living room area by a glass loft partition (for privacy, curtains were also thought out with which to close the partition). Part of the former room was used as a dining room. The rest of the area was taken under the dressing room, it turned out to be a walk-through: you can go from the bedroom and from the hallway. The bathrooms were combined and made a bathroom with a shower cabin. The balcony remained with the new bedroom. Finishing For wall decoration, we chose non-woven wallpaper for painting and paint of different shades. The base color is light gray, which was used as a background. The walls in the dining area are painted in a deep blue-green color. This area is viewed from the kitchen-living room, bedroom and hallway and acts as a fairly active accent. On the floor in all areas, quartz vinyl tiles were used for wood. This is a practical coating, and thanks to this choice, according to Olga, they avoided docking and simplified repair work. The finishing of the apron looks like a single canvas is a large-format porcelain stoneware, which was selected in size so as to get a coating without seams, except in the corner. Visually, the apron echoes the tabletop. In the bathroom, they decided to paint the walls and chose a slightly darker gray than in the rest of the apartment. Porcelain stoneware was used only in the shower area and the wall above the toilet. And on the floor is the same quartz vinyl, only with a pattern for concrete. It can be laid even in “wet” areas. Furniture and storage systems In fact, there are two storage spaces in the apartment, but this is enough: a large built-in wardrobe in the corridor between the dressing room and the hallway and the dressing room itself. The first one was planned for outerwear, a dressing room for everyday things. It used open storage systems with shelves, drawers and rods. In the bathroom, storage is decided by a cabinet under the sink and a small hanging cabinet above the washing machine for hygiene supplies and household items. The kitchen was assembled at IKEA, a rather non-standard solution turned out to be implemented even with ready-made cabinets. “Part of the kitchen is located as if in an aisle, and the second line is pressed against the wall in the living room area, such an arrangement does not take up much space, Olga comments. At the stage of the project, the configuration of the kitchen cabinets, the opening of drawers, the location of household appliances were agreed upon. On one side there is a refrigerator, a hob, a 600 mm dishwasher, a sink, and on the other side there is a module with drawers, a pencil case with an oven. In terms of the construction of partitions, the dimensions of the kitchen modules were taken into account.” Lighting The designer, together with the owners, decided not to lower the ceiling for the installation of built-in lighting, it was already low. Therefore, we chose overhead lighting. In the area of the living room-kitchen, dining room, dressing room and hallway, these are track lamps. In the bedroom there is a central pendant lamp with long cords. The built-in ceiling light was made only in the bathroom. Additional lighting scenarios: sconces above the bedside tables, over the dressing table in the dressing room, at the mirror in the bathroom. Designer Olga Slugina, author of the project: The key in the design of the apartment is the layout, around which the concept was built. A non-standard corner kitchen, a bedroom in a “glass cube”, the opportunity to get to the same location in different ways — the merits of the planning solution. The interior turned out to be graphic – the lines of the glass partition, the direction of the busbar for the lamps, the vertical lines of the curtains. The background of the apartment is gray. Shades of yellow and blue-green harmoniously refresh the neutral-colored interior, and Icelandic landscapes and animals combined with personal photos of residents add romance with a fair amount of humor.
