Beautiful garden from scratch: expert advice Design 26.06.2022 A house built in an open field is a typical picture of our days. Alexander Grivko, art director of the landscape company Il Nature, tells and shows how to fix the situation Alexander Grivkolandscape design Landscape architect, art director of Il Nature, author of luxury parks around the world English lawn In a few months, the site, where there was no vegetation, turned into a regular park. The heart of the garden is a spacious lawn located near the main house and the summer pavilion. Here you can pitch tents and have a festive picnic. The lawn is bordered by small-leaved lime trees (Tilia cordata) trimmed in the shape of a cube. In the foreground is the Japanese spiraea “Little Princess” (Spiraea japonica Little Princess). During the flowering period (3-4 weeks), it looks very picturesque, a la granny calico. And if you trim it, the spiraea will turn into a neat green border 30 cm high. On the left is a hedge made of molded plum—leaved hawthorn (Crataegus prunifolia). Below — tiarella cordifolia (Tiarella cordifolia). In the center is a fluffy carpet of shorn Japanese spiraea “Little Princesses” (Spiraea japonica Little Princess). In the lower right corner is a winged birchbark (Euonymus alatus). To maintain its shape in the form of an umbrella, only one haircut per year is enough. The lawn is seeded. In the spring, crocuses bloom on it, and after the first mowing, smooth grass remains. The lawn is closely adjacent to the path. They didn’t do the curb. This is not a city park, so you can and should walk on the grass here. In order for the porous sandstone path to be dry in any weather, it was laid on concrete. For lighting, I chose the lamps of the Belgian brand Bel Lighting. Their soft diffused light is directed downwards, so that it does not blind, but creates an intimate atmosphere and highlights exactly the place you need. Behind the wrought—iron bench is a hedge of plum-leaved hawthorn (Crataegus prunifolia). The rosary is bordered by a border of Japanese spiraea “Little Princesses” (Spiraea japonica Little Princess). In this part of the garden, we made a step-by-step sandstone path. It was laid on gravel with sand, leaving wide seams for grass to germinate. Some plants barely bloom, others bloom. Following the tulips (White Marvel), lilacs and roses begin to please the eye. In the center is a mountain pine (Pinus mugo). In the depths there is an umbrella—shaped birch bark (Euonymus alatus). The role of the walls is played by a hedge of plum-leaved hawthorn (Crataegus prunifolia). To his left is the white “Elegantissima” turf (Cornus alba Elegantissima). English roses selected by the famous David Austin (Sophie’s Rose variety) feel at home in our climate. Pots with forget—me-nots, a bottle, a milk jug with a saucer, cups – all from the Emile Marqu store. Tablecloth “Lace maker” and pillow “Naturel” — salon “Interior shop”. Photo Alexey Lukin; Tatiana Abdrashitova Style Ekaterina Musatova Picturesque accents The garden paths are planned in such a way that you can walk for hours on the closed territory of the plot. Multi-dimensional landings create a sense of depth. In the coniferous part of the garden, the eye glides from one group of plants to another, so that the open landscape does not get bored. In the center there is a mountain pine (Pinus mugo). On the right is a white turf “Elegantissima” (Cornus alba Elegantissima). To his left is the juniper “Pfitzeriana Aurea” (Juniperus media Pfitzeriana Aurea). Photo Alexey Lukin; Tatiana Abdrashitova Style Ekaterina Musatova Shady alleys An alley of uncut small-leaved lime trees (Tilia cordata) leads from the main entrance to the garden pavilion. In the shade of their crowns there is a flower garden of groundcover perennial — Tiarella cordifolia (Tiarella cordifolia). The lawn in such conditions will grow with bald spots, but tiarella (which in Russia many perceive as a weed) looks great. On the lawn there is a bronze bear by the French sculptor Livio Benedetti. Photo Alexey Lukin; Tatiana Abdrashitova Style Ekaterina Musatova Paved areas The layout of the garden is directly connected to the house. This area with curbs of sheared brilliant dogwood (Cotoneaster lucidus) serves as a continuation of the terrace. Over time, furniture or sculpture will appear on it. We were lucky to find good masons who know how to work with the natural pattern of stone. Thanks to them, the masonry of galtovannogo * sandstone looks like an old pavement. The adjacent paths are lined with durable German clinker, Hagemeister. On the site there is a Canadian irga (Amelanchier lamarckii) with an umbrella—shaped crown. By the way, now it is one of the most fashionable plants. In early spring, when there are not even leaves on the other trees, the irga turns into a white flower cloud. And in autumn, its leaves are painted in lingonberry tones and bring an oriental note to the landscape. Photo Alexey Lukin; Tatiana Abdrashitova Style Ekaterina Musatova Original content from the site
