“We made an apartment in a Stalinist house in the Timiryazevsky Park area for my friends — a young married couple whose tastes I managed to study from previous projects,” says Nadia Zotova. – The guys have been planning to move to a larger apartment for a long time and invited me at the search stage. After reviewing different options, we finally got here and immediately realized – this is it! Despite the fact that the last renovation was done here forty years ago, the apartment seemed to us very successful – bright, with high ceilings, convenient layout and a beautiful view of the Ostankino Tower.”

“The apartment has not been renovated for forty years, but we fell in love with it at first sight”

“In the living room there was an idea to put a dining table on a single bronze leg. We lost our way in search of someone who could make such a table, the surface of which would not be matte and not glossy, but textured. As a result, we had to cast the bronze base ourselves and apply the coinage on top.”

“We made a separate bedroom, a common area of the living room and kitchen, bathrooms and an office, keeping in mind the idea that over time it can easily transform into a nursery. It was also necessary to think over an unusual storage system. The small area of the apartment did not allow to make a separate dressing room. It was clear at the stage of buying an apartment, but the owners were not scared, since they do not have so many things.”

“The funniest story happened to us with a chandelier that hangs over the dining table. I saw her at the Milan Salon. This Portuguese brand was not yet represented in Russia, but representatives of the factory assured us that they would find a way to send the chandelier to Russia directly from the exhibition. They got the wrong address and the chandelier flew to St. Petersburg, then for unknown reasons it left for Germany instead of Moscow. We searched for her at various customs offices, but she traveled for another year before finally reaching her destination. Now we laugh that we have such a stray chandelier that has seen the world.”

“The customer is my old friend, so we decided on the color scheme quickly. We immediately agreed on the love of complex dusty shades and decided to avoid everything bright, open and unambiguous. We went to Paris for inspiration. We endlessly photographed the gray-blue doors, which are found in great variety in this city, looked at how great all these shades of blue, emerald, blue, gray look together. We definitely caught the mood of the future apartment in the Parisian air! From this trip, the customer brought another dream — she wanted an emerald-blue velvet sofa to appear in the interior. So we got the main accents, around which all the color and texture solutions were already built.”

“There was no room for things in the long, typical Stalinist corridor. But in our climate, it is important to have a place to put shoes and hang clothes, so we came up with a clever partition of cabinets that separated the hallway from the living room, and placed bookshelves in the center of the portal.”

“The central motif of the project is the same French gray-blue portals and aged gray-blue doors with patina and carving. The most interesting thing is that when I drew the sketches and we approved everything, the customer began to worry whether they were too decorative and pretentious. She was worried whether they would attract too much attention to themselves and even offered to make them white “for reliability.” I reassured her that we can always repaint them if we see that we have overdone it.”

“The color scheme turned out to be deep: dark gray for the kitchen, maroon for the bedroom, mustard yellow for the office. White-gray tones with the addition of yellow-mustard were chosen for the study, remembering that in a couple of years it could turn into a nursery. It was important for me to preserve the air of this apartment and the ceiling height as much as possible. To do this, we made high plaster cornices, and a layout of Parisian-style moldings appeared on the walls.”

“As soon as we approved the project, my friend’s husband got a contract to work in America, and they left for two years, completely entrusting us with the repair of their future housing. We took our time, because we knew that they would not arrive soon, and we could implement all our ideas without fuss. The owners only came to Russia a couple of times during this time and were unspeakably glad that we saved them from all the repair hassle. And just for their return, the interior was completely ready and equipped.”

“The toilet is quite small, in fact only a toilet and a sink. In its design, we acted all-in. We found elegant wallpaper, Osborne & Little, with golden Japanese carp, bringing good luck, and supplemented them with a marble black slab with shiny inclusions. “In the old house, there are communications between the bathroom and toilet, so we could not combine them. We came up with a decorative portal separating the bathroom to somehow beat the modest area. We put the bathroom in this alcove and got a comfortable, very cozy room. The pink-beige color of the walls worked extremely well. This shade of oyster shell is so soft, it shades the skin well. Even in artificial light, you look at yourself in the mirror, and you are always fresh and good. For women, this is super important, agree.”
