Designer Kelly Westler has turned a typical California bungalow into the abode of an eternal holiday

There are interiors that add up instantly. There are others where imagination is required to discern the possibilities behind the maze of imperfections. A new project by American designer Kelly Westler (Kelly Wearstler) referred to the second case, even if it’s hard to believe now.

Before the renovation, the house was a typical Californian Spanish-style bungalow with white, sun-scorched walls. The new owners, comedian Sebastian Maniscalco and his wife, artist Lana Gomez, liked the open layout and the condition of the blank canvas — but the space required changes and bright colors.

The result exceeded all expectations. Contrasting combinations of shades and prints, a riot of color and a variety of textures instantly give out the style of Kelly Westler. Lana Gomez had previously worked with a designer: the artist’s paintings often appeared in her projects, and it was the canvas in Westler’s office that gave impetus to Lana’s career. Unsurprisingly, when it came to decorating a new home, Gomez knew exactly who to turn to.

First of all, the designer decided to get rid of the inappropriate architectural decor introduced into the interior by the previous owners, and add details more appropriate to the style of the building. The standard rectangular door in the hallway was replaced with an arch, the staircase was finished anew, and the openings to the kitchen and living room were framed with dark Portoro marble. Squares of linen wallpaper appeared on the walls, assembled into bizarre compositions. Flowing from room to room, this pattern creates a whole visual narrative, and the paired shades of the panels change from blue to coral and from coral to cream.

The walls in the dining room, as in most rooms, are decorated with squares of textured linen wallpaper in paired shades. The oak table according to the designer’s sketches is surrounded by vintage chairs, Saporiti, 1980. In the center is a Reaction Poetique dish designed by Jaime Ayon, inspired by the works of Le Corbusier. On the wall is a painting by the artist Lana Gomez Spring Sunset.

The furnishings of the rooms also mixed all possible styles and eras, from ironic postmodern objects to design classics. Dramatic shapes and bright shades emphasize the love of customers for contemporary art and sculpture, and the works of design masters such as Ettore Sottsass, Verner Panton and Jean Royère are next to the works of the stars of the younger generation: Katie Stout, Misha Kahn and Anton Alvarez. The final touches were helped by the owners themselves. For example, some of the carpets were woven from sketches of abstract canvases by Lana.

On the wall is a painting by American artist Leonard Brenner. The color of the linen wallpaper was specially selected for the picture. On a chair — a jacket with sequins, Moschino, 1980s.

Dramatic shapes and bright shades emphasize the love of customers for contemporary art

Despite the fact that the couple was ready to support almost any idea, there was also something in which they were not going to concede — comfort. An obvious confirmation of this is the sofas that the designer created specifically for the project: their size is calculated perfectly so that you can comfortably stretch out on them while watching a movie together.
