Country house with a large living room

Having started the reconstruction of the 1930 house in the suburbs of Paris, the designer Veronica Isker first of all attached a large living room with a glass wall to it

The old house, located in the city of Montrouge near Paris, has been in an abandoned state for the last twenty years. That’s how the designer Veronika Isker found him. Having decided to turn the ruins into a cozy cottage for her family, she acted decisively. In just a couple of months, an additional residential block with an area of 70 sq. m was added to the building of the 1930s.

The living room is located in a new annex facing the garden with a glass wall. The wall with a built-in fireplace is painted with HC40, Ressource, to match the green foliage in the garden. Weldon sofa with linen upholstery, Marie’s Corner. Pillows from The Conran Shop and Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche. The table and chair were bought at the Saint-Ouen flea market. Carpet, Caravane.

The new space consists of several rooms open towards a glass wall with swing doors. Veronica placed it on the south side of the building to ensure maximum access of natural light to the rooms. “The overgrown garden looked like a wild forest in contrast to the empty rooms of an abandoned house.

In addition, there is a monastery nearby, the bells of which ring every hour. There was a complete feeling that you were in a remote village,” the designer recalls. She created this house for her family as a refuge away from the bustling metropolis.

“Something in between a private monastery and a holiday home,” Veronika laughs. — Based on this concept, I organized the space so that a person moves freely from the kitchen to the dining room, garden or living room, and the house itself is in a continuous dialogue with nature. Therefore, I chose only eco-friendly materials for its decoration.”

In the historical part of the house on the ground floor, Veronika has located the master bedroom. On the other two floors there is a room for children with a private bathroom and a spacious guest bedroom. I decided to leave the wooden beams on the ceiling open. According to the designer, they symbolize the connection between old and new architecture, the boundary of which is marked by the “red line” of the hall.

Its walls are painted in ruby red, which Veronica calls the color of the perfect lipstick. Another interesting detail of the hall is the combination of polished concrete and lacquered wood in the floor decoration. Different materials are interconnected like pieces of a puzzle. Immediately after the hall there is a pink study and a living room, painted to match the foliage of trees growing in the garden.

Bright walls alternate with white, there is an explanation for this. Veronica is a regular at flea markets. It was there that she found most of the furniture and accessories for her home. “To link disparate objects together, I resorted to my favorite formula: if you want to combine different styles, use a white background,” says the designer. — In the design of the master bedroom, this technique helped me to link together an old Scandinavian-style chest of drawers, English wallpaper, ceramic cacti and pink bed linen.”

To emphasize the spirit of the time when the house was built, Veronika decorated her parents’ bathroom in retro style. Smooth walls of polished concrete and laconic linen curtains became the ideal backdrop for a 1930s-style bathtub and a 1950s table. “I completely identify with this house, it corresponds to the lifestyle of our family.

Probably that’s why the children immediately fell in love with him,” the hostess concludes. — Free access to the garden gives a feeling of living in nature, and this is truly a breath of fresh air. Here we hide from the world, but at the same time it is a very open public space where we like to gather with friends.

We often receive guests and note only one minus: the time spent chatting, playing games and cooking together, for some reason, always flies by unnoticed.”
