A sculptural staircase, arched windows and high ceilings, a spacious living room with a library — this description, worthy of an English manor, actually refers to a city apartment in the historical district of Voronezh. Its owner is a modern businesswoman, has two sons, runs a large company and has a refined taste. The interiors of the space were designed by Molbó Buro studio, preserving the balance between classic and modern solutions in the project.

The apartment with an area of 203 m2 occupies the last two floors of an eight-storey club house. “We immediately decided that the classic style implies high doors and enlarged the openings, and the standard balcony blocks in the living room were replaced with wooden windows with English bars. We also made a brick fence on the balcony and made panoramic glazing, so the room became much brighter,” says Natalia Molbo, the founder of the bureau and head of the project.

“The addition of the attic floor made it possible to place a nursery, an office and a bathroom there. After the redevelopment, the apartment turned out to be spacious and very bright. White walls with plaster moldings serve as a neutral background and make the space look like a gallery. For the floor, in contrast to this, we chose an array of American oak in a dark shade with a brutal treatment.”

“The project is based on a combination of many textures: glossy surfaces, polished steel, American walnut, mirrored facades, textured glass, bronze, crystal, natural leather, black metal — all these materials have made the interior textured, you want to touch it, look at it.”

“We paid special attention to the stairs to the second floor. Its manufacture and assembly were very difficult technically. One of the craftsmen who worked on the project was a mechanic factory turner. He has been manufacturing parts for rocket engines all his life and is used to measuring the accuracy of his work in millimeters, so our ladder can rightfully be considered a product of space technology!”

“The center of the composition in the kitchen was a large arched window, it offers a view of the park. We used a non-trivial arrangement of household appliances: a steamer and a Wolf fryer are built into the countertop, and an oven and a Miele coffee machine are located in drywall niches. The hood made of polished steel has become a key element on the wall on the right. We abandoned a full-fledged dining table in the kitchen in favor of a small island for breakfast in order to make the most of the space. The main meals are held in the dining room, we like the idea of reviving this culture.”

“In the bedroom, we wanted to create a sense of lightness, use a mix of different styles and eras. The calm color scheme allowed us to pay more attention to the details of the interior and decor.”

“The bathroom is made in a classic English style, we took Italian Devon & Devon plumbing as a basis. The factory is very careful about stylistic authenticity, so we were able to implement the idea in detail. The charm of the space is added by the work of the French artist Francois Sauk.”

“A special place in the apartment was an office with a round window located above the kitchen. A desk and an armchair from Poltrona Frau and a vintage lamp from the 60s, found in an antique shop, seem to belong to the same era. In such an environment, you want to write books or send hand-written letters to your loved ones.”
