Scandi-style interior: how the designer transformed a house built in the 90s with her own hands

In the house, it turned out to create a general atmosphere of harmony and tranquility, exactly the one that the customers talked about. There are no flashy solutions and bright colors or ornaments, but there are natural colors and natural wood textures.

Now rarely anyone can be proud of having built a house with their own hands, but in the 1990s it was in the order of things. This is exactly what happened with this object, father and son worked alongside professional masons. Unfortunately, the almost finished building, but without interior decoration, was empty for more than 20 years. Having created a family, the son and his wife decided to move out of the city and ordered the missing works and interior decoration.

First of all, the family found a foreman and already through him came to the designer. The reconstruction was supposed to move in the following direction to use what is available, with minimal means, without any serious alterations affecting load-bearing structures and engineering systems, to create a modern, comfortable space for permanent residence of the family. At the same time, the silicate brick building had a wiring of water supply and sewerage pipes, stairs, part of the internal partitions and a fireplace.

It was necessary to provide a spacious kitchen-living room, a parent’s bedroom, two children’s rooms, a guest bathroom with a shower on the first floor, and a master bathroom on the second, another utility room, storage space, etc.

Layout and renovation

Initially, the entrance to the house was from the northern facade facing the street, and from the south side there was a view of the apple orchard and an open area intended for recreation. The designer proposed to organize an additional entrance from the south, and also to add a summer terrace there. The young and hospitable hosts liked the idea. “To drink wine, look at the fire, fry kebabs” customers primarily perceived their house as a place for joint recreation and leisure.

The southern entrance turned out to be a window opening cut down to the floor mark. In the same way, but only by making openings down to the 45 cm mark from the floor level, the window areas in the living room and in the hall of the second floor were increased. As a result, the rooms have become brighter and with cozy window sills for sitting.

There are new internal partitions made of light building blocks. The wet zones remained in their places. The heating of the first floor is provided by a water underfloor heating, the second by panel radiators. The autonomous heating and water supply system operates from a gas boiler with automatic control (in the basement there is a boiler room with an entrance from the hall of the first floor).

Throughout the house, the old wooden windows were replaced with metal-plastic windows with double-glazed windows. The designer proposed to decorate the window openings from the inside with neat platbands. The customers liked the idea. The installation of platbands simplified the work of builders, protected the outer corners from damage in the future, and generally added decorativeness. After installing new windows, it turned out that the gaps between the slopes and the inner surfaces of the walls in some places reached 12-13 cm. The designer brought to the object a whole package with samples of moldings, platbands, skirting boards of different firms and selected suitable options by trial. We stopped at very wide baseboards.

A reliable entrance door opens into the vestibule and is not visible from the hallway. But the window facing the porch allows you to look at the guests, let a dog or cat into the house in time. Due to the glass canvas of the second entrance door, the hallway (even if it is located on the north side of the house) turned out to be European-bright. The corridor area is separated by another floor covering — porcelain stoneware for wood.

It is curious that at the time of drawing up the terms of reference in 2019, they did not even need an office. The couple held senior positions in the IT field, so they were going to work in the office. No one could have imagined that the labor legislation was about to undergo changes. So at first it was necessary to lead on the “remote” from the kitchen. Therefore, it is not surprising that in 2021 the second stage of reconstruction began to transform the summer guest room-attic into a full-fledged office.
