Small apartment of 27 m2 in Rio de Janeiro, inspired by Santorini

The interior of this small apartment in the Ipanema area is inspired by houses in Santorini. Concrete kitchen, white painted walls, simple wooden furniture and exposed beams — this is how Bric Arquitetura bureau reflected the style and atmosphere of the Greek island

The owner of a small apartment with an area of only 27 m2 in Ipanema (one of the southern districts of Rio de Janeiro near the famous beach) — loves to travel. She lives in Sao Paulo, but because of her frequent travels, she needed a base in Rio – albeit a small one. Having chosen this micro-apartment, the hostess turned to architects Mariana Teixeira and Pedro Pantoja from the Bric Arquitetura bureau and ordered its complete alteration. “The customer wanted to create an interior that would refer to the houses in Santorini,” the designers say.

First of all, the wall separating the living room and the bedroom was eliminated in order to turn the apartment into a studio. The spaces were combined, and the kitchen was separated by a shelf-partition that does not reach the ceiling. This allowed us to preserve both the feeling of spaciousness and the privacy of the sleeping area. Part of the parquet floor, characteristic of old buildings in Rio de Janeiro, was reused – as a covering for a countertop almost 6 meters in length.

In the decor, the architects chose the style of rustic chic — a simple interior with a small amount of furniture, natural materials and textures (wood, concrete, stone, linen). “We relied on colors and textures taken from nature itself, occasionally using wood. It warms the space with a concrete base,” explains Mariana, “The combination of textured surfaces and shades of concrete and linen, for example, causes very pleasant sensations.

“The budget was limited, we were able to save on carpentry and relied on concrete structures, partitions and kitchen cabinets. They are left open, later the hostess will decide whether to close these storage spaces with doors or drawers or not,” the designers say. “The small kitchen is designed to preserve the principle of a working triangle (sink, refrigerator and stove) with the ability to move freely between them.”

Another interesting detail was two doors (entrance and bathroom) — they are made without platbands and up to the ceiling to take advantage of the height of the apartment and increase the feeling of spaciousness.
