Designer Alyona Gerasimova designed the interior in the style of ageless modern classics and entered a lot of storage systems into a small space, which at the same time do not clutter it. How did it work out? We tell you in the material.

Customers and tasks

The owner of this small apartment in a Moscow residential complex is a young student girl. Her main wish for Alyona Gerasimova was the placement of storage systems for a large wardrobe. “The idea and at the same time the task of the project was to combine classic and modern styles, to provide a lot of hidden storage systems, but to get a spacious apartment, not cluttered with furniture,” comments the author of the project.

Layout

The developer rented an apartment without partitions. Following the plan of wet zones, the designer proposed the following arrangement: at the entrance there is a large hallway with built-in storage systems, from it an entrance to the bathroom and a passage to the kitchen-living room, where the kitchen is located on the adjacent wall with the bathroom. The entrance to the bedroom is from the living room, the space is separated by partitions and a doorway with a curtain. The apartment has two windows, so both the kitchen-living room and the bedroom have received a sufficient amount of natural light. 

Finishing

The decoration used traditional materials and opted for an emphasis on classic details. So, the walls of all rooms, except the bathroom, are painted in a neutral beige shade. They are complemented by classic moldings. The joint of the ceiling and walls is decorated with high plaster cornices with stucco decoration, another reference to the classical style. In addition, this technique helps to increase the ceiling and add scale to the entire room. The floor skirting boards are also high, painted in the color of the walls. 

The floor decoration was chosen for wood, this quartz vinyl tile is a practical material that is not afraid of humidity and mechanical loads, so it can be laid even in the hallway and in the kitchen. “In a small room, it is important to maintain a single floor surface by creating “patches” of different materials that give a visual fragmentation of the space,” explains the choice of the designer. 

In the bathroom, the paint of the same shade as in the entire apartment is combined with large-format granite marble on the floor and in the shower area. 

Mirrors play an important role in the decoration. They work to visually enlarge the space and add to its grandeur. The walls next to the sofa, in the corner of the bedroom, in the bathroom, in the hallway, in the bathroom are decorated with mirror panels framed by moldings. 

Storage systems

The main storage system is concentrated in the hallway. This is a combination of cabinets made in different designs so that they are combined with the walls and other functional elements of the room. So, for example, the cabinets located on the wall with the bathroom door are made of wood in the same way as the column of the kitchen set, which they are continued with.

The cabinets located opposite are made in the color of the walls and decorated with moldings. Some of the facades are mirrored, which echoes the shape of the mirror panels in the hallway. Inside, not only storage of things is organized, but also a utility compartment with a washing machine and dryer, as well as a built-in ironing board, which reclines if necessary, and a place for an iron. 

In addition to the closets in the hallway, two small lockers are organized in the bedroom on the sides of the bed. For storing cosmetics and household chemicals, there is a place in the bathroom: a cabinet under the sink, a cabinet with a mirror over the sink, as well as over the toilet installation. 

The kitchen set looks compact, but in fact it is roomy. The upper cabinets were not extended to the ceiling, they were limited to low modules, but storage is also organized in columns with built-in appliances.

Lighting

The general light in all rooms is solved in the form of spotlights built into the ceiling. In addition to them, ceiling and furniture lighting is provided at the same light temperature as spotlights. There are also local scenarios of light sconces by the bed, a chandelier over the dining table, a lamp over a mirrored cabinet in the bathroom.

In the interior, we made a classic basis, namely, we used a high plaster cornice (despite the fact that the room is small, this technique gave scale), painted walls with moldings and wood on the floor. And filled with modern furniture. I really love this mix, such interiors age slowly, and you can change the furniture over time, it will fit seamlessly into our classic shell.
