The style of the era of the 60s: how the designer transformed a one-room apartment of 33.8 sq. m. m in Khrushchev | ivd.ru

The apartment was arranged at a time when foreign brands left the market. But designer Galina Sokolova successfully used materials and furniture from Russian manufacturers, which played only a plus.

Customers and tasks

This apartment is located in a typical block house of series II-18, built in 1963. The owner is a young girl, a student of the Faculty of Political Science. The era of the construction of the house, the passion of the hostess for the op-art style, as well as the love of designer Galina Sokolova for the aesthetics of the 60s determined the look of the future interior of the modern space with references to the 60s.

Redevelopment

The studio apartment is typical, there is a room with an area of 20 meters, a small kitchen that does not reach 6 squares in size, a tiny bathroom of 2.2 sq. m, an entrance hall. The kitchen, hallway and room were connected by a corridor, which the hostess wanted to get rid of. The designer did this in terms of redevelopment. The entrance to the room was organized from the hallway, and to the kitchen from the room.

The corridor was also used, partially expanding the kitchen (they made a niche for the installation of columns with a refrigerator and pull-out shelves), as well as for the organization of a laundry unit for a washing machine.

Finishing

In the decoration, preference was given to basic materials: paint on the walls, wallpaper with a geometric pattern that helps to recreate the mood of the era of the 60s, in the room on the wall behind the sofa, porcelain stoneware and tiles in the bathroom and laundry room. On the floor in the room there is a laminate “herringbone”, imitating parquet. In the kitchen and in the hallway large-format porcelain stoneware.

The apartment has low ceilings (2.5 m), and the designer wanted to somehow compensate for this shortcoming with the help of visual techniques. We found a non-standard solution to the high doors of 2.2 meters. So the ceilings seem higher than they really are.

Furniture and storage systems

In the hallway, it was not possible to install a cabinet of standard depth due to limited space, so they made a narrow cabinet with a depth of 38 cm. Inside there are hooks for outerwear and shelves for storing small things.

A full-fledged storage space is equipped in the room is a four-door wardrobe. There is also a chest of drawers for small things.

The kitchen managed to fit everything you need, even a dishwasher (compact) and a microwave oven (built into the upper cabinets). The hob was chosen for two burners to save space on the work surface. The refrigerator is built into a niche, which was organized on the site of the former corridor.

In furniture, preference was given to Russian brands and custom production.

Lighting

Low ceilings were taken into account in the design of lighting: suspensions or large chandeliers would not look good in such conditions. Therefore, there are spot semi-recessed lamps on the ceiling, and additional lighting is implemented with the help of wall sconces over the sofa, a table lamp on the chest of drawers, a mirror illumination in the bathroom.

Designer Galina Sokolova, author of the project:

The style can be defined as an imitation of the minimalism of the 60s. The era of boundless lightness and simplicity, when paper wallpaper with a geometric pattern comes into fashion, the release of furniture becomes massive, the influence of op art in interior design is felt. Considering that the house itself belongs to this amazing era, I wanted to re-breathe the spirit of the 60s into the interior of this small apartment. An unusual decoration was the plaster head of an ancient Roman god. Once my client studied at an art school and painted plaster heads of ancient Roman gods and heroes. Antinous’ head was her favorite, and therefore she travels with the customer to all rented and non-rented apartments. In this apartment we decided to give the sculpture a new bright color, breathe new life. The yellow sofa was chosen because it resembles the sun and adds joyful shades to the interior, echoing the amazing poster in the style of op-art based on Victor Vasareli.
