The main accent of the living-dining room is the famous chandelier from Ingo Maurer. “We adapted it for ourselves and replaced the original Japanese paper suspensions with gold leaf sheets,” says Yana. How would you describe your home in one sentence? In response to this question , Yana Aspanadze picks up words for a long time and finally raps out: “The house is a cave made with a soul.” And then he laughs: “Take at least the fact that almost everything is made by the hands of the owner himself — as in ancient times, when the word designer did not exist yet.

Yana’s husband is Georgi Aspanadze, a furniture designer and a carpenter in one person. “We immediately decided not to limit ourselves to a certain style,” Yana continues. “The only criterion when choosing materials and furniture was … love! Sometimes it went to extremes. For example, we used eleven types of tiles at once to finish the bathroom. We just couldn’t choose one and ordered everything we like in a small amount.

The dining table — a real masterpiece of Georgi — is made of fourteen types of wood, while I wanted to make the window sills out of stone. And although my husband, like any woodworker, considers the stone too cold, I persuaded him to go to the warehouse. The green and blue granite found there conquered us at first sight, and now Georgi is grateful that I still asked him to give the stone a chance.”

With such a seemingly impulsive approach to work, the interior does not look eclectic. “I am a professional and I know how to cope with eclecticism,” Yana retorts. — Although this concept does not fit our interior. The word “balancing act” is closer to me. It is this ability not to lose balance in any situation that is the most important skill in the work of a designer. In our case, natural materials, natural shades and the principles of the wabi-sabi philosophy, which are close to our family, helped to maintain the balance. My husband and I are passionate about Asian culture, love tea ceremonies, collect kimonos, practice Tao-Yin, and even got a dog of the Japanese Shiba Inu breed.”

The room itself is also interesting. The apartment with an area of 107 square meters is located in the center of Krasnodar and occupies an entire floor of a house built in 1934 — a former barracks. “The height of the ceilings in the rooms differs by twenty centimeters, how this is possible, we never understood, but just in case we opened the wooden floors, raised the floors and admired their excellent “health,” recalls Yana. — Each of the three rooms has a chimney, but we used only one and made a wood-burning fireplace in the living room. The role of the load-bearing beam between the living room and the kitchen is performed by an ordinary railway rail. This fact seemed funny, and they decided to leave the rail open.”

The color scheme is based on hazy shades of damp earth, dry wood, ochre, umber, clay, beetroot and coal. “I prefer English and French paints to all types of wall decoration, but there was another experiment in this project,” says Yana. — The specialist of the decorative plasters salon turned out to be so persistent that he literally swore to reproduce any texture I name. Yielding to persuasion, I asked to make a suede texture of a complex shade of chocolate with a slight frost effect and, as it were, slightly misted. Now this is the most accurate way to describe the walls in our living room. And it’s just a gift of fate!”
