What does the house of decorator Katya Gerdt and director Denis Evstigneev look like Design 23.02.2022 In a playful family struggle between the city and the Moscow region, Katya Gerdt and Denis Evstigneev chose a compromise: a country house whose interiors resemble their Moscow apartment Decorator Katya Gerdt on the terrace of her country house with her puppy Masya. Photo Mikhail Loskutov My husband is absolutely a city dweller. Two hours out of town — and he’s already going to Moscow. It is important for him that, having agreed on the phone, he can meet in fifteen minutes in a cafe, then turn around with business in an hour, and even turn to the market on the way. I’m a real country person: even as a child I was taken to school from the country, and I just dreamed of living in the forest. My mother lived out of town until the last few days and under no circumstances was going to move. And twenty years ago, I persuaded my husband’s mother to sell a one-room apartment and build her own house. Before that, she lived in state-owned dachas – such as in the movies: with aluminum inventory numbers on the furniture. Living room. Sofa, BoConcept. Armchairs, vintage, Italy, 1960s. Photo Mikhail Loskutov Together we came up with this one-storey house, classic, traditional, sincere and very cozy. When Galina Borisovna was gone, I just couldn’t leave it empty. Denis was categorically against the move: “You betrayed our Moscow apartment!” – half jokingly, half seriously, he accused me. A fragment of the living room. Table-bar, Europe, XIX century. Paintings from the personal collection of the hostess Photo Mikhail Loskutov We started repairs just before the pandemic, and in March we were forced to move to a construction site. It’s good that at one time Denis built a bathhouse on the site — he didn’t let anyone in there, and Indian-style doors and once-bought furniture were put into the interior decoration. There we settled in the same room! It was an amazingly romantic summer! Work – house repairs – nearby, we live in a hut in the forest, but if it got crowded, then I went to the “scandalous house”: a wooden shed with one window, a table and a cot. But the first time we did not argue about the repair. For twenty years, the house has not become outdated at all, we decided to adapt ourselves to the existing layout without changing everything radically. It was only necessary to replace the doors with stricter ones, update the stucco, change the purpose of the rooms. The kitchen is made according to the sketches of the owners, “Craft Furniture”. Especially after Mom left in the spring of this year. From our old dacha I brought family portraits and the “Shustovsky inheritance” — that’s what we jokingly call disparate items that once belonged to a great-great-grandfather. But, on the contrary, with them in the house it immediately became warmer. There were also modern items that parents would hardly approve of. Well, when Denis took up the arrangement of the kitchen in place of two small rooms, I realized that we seemed to be staying here. For him, the kitchen is like a second office, a place where he literally works when he’s not shooting a movie. In Moscow, he planned every locker, and here he repeated his comfortable plywood kitchen, so it seems that for the first time he felt at home outside the city. And so much so that six months later he got a dog, and immediately a big one – an Irish wolfhound.
